Dear Old Boys,

I returned from the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown yesterday, where I conducted the 2016 South African National Schools Big Band. This band is comprised of the top high school jazz students who are auditioned from around the country. Three SACS boys made the band, namely Michael Hoyle (tenor saxophone), Ian Hucheson (electric bass) and Seth Meyer (bass trombone). Each of the boys played brilliantly and were part of a very special band this year.

Below is a picture of us, after the sold-out performance of the National Schools Band, along with a friend and colleague of mine, Dr. Gordon Vernick (co-ordinator of Jazz Studies at the Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia) who assisted me with the band.

Notably, there were also three other SACS Old Boys who were prominent throughout the festival, namely Sisonke Xonti (tenor sax), Justin Sasman (bass trombone) and Christian Chandler (trombone). It was an excellent week with the SACS current and Old Boys spreading the name and swelling the fame, for sure!

Warm Regards,

Dan
